History: One of the potential great leaders of his day, Cèsar Borja--known to most as Cesare Borgia--fell into tumult, exile and quickly his death in 1507. It was a life cut short, a missed opportunity which inspired his contemporary Niccolò Machiavelli to include him as a cautionary tale to other leaders about the dangers even talented leaders can fall be trapped by.

It made Cèsar a prime candidate for "Project Rewrite," a project of the British government. His DNA--along with a handful of other Borgia DNA--was 'donated' to a young woman named Vanessa Collins, eager to be fertilized and turn her affair into a husband.

Less than three years after they met, Cecilia was born to Roger Borden and Vanessa in Whitecraig, East Lothian, Scotland, almost 500 years after Cèsar's death. The birth of their second daughter prompted the pair to be properly married, with Roger claiming paternity for both girls—and divorcing the mother of his eldest daughter. The little family was even blessed with a proper heir a year later when Lucas was born, and for a lovely moment in time, the Bordens were genuinely happy.

Cecila was still only five when things started to deteriorate. Even the birth of her sister Janet didn’t quite pull Roger and Vanessa back together again. The divorce came less than two years later, when Roger’s secretary Julia turned up rather pregnant.

It wasn’t so bad, at first. They had a tight, happy household until, when Cecilia was twelve, her mother fell badly ill. Johanna dropped out of school to work, Cecilia and Lucas took up side jobs, and baby Janet was sent off to live with an aunt. For a year they managed to maintain, but a turn for the worse in Vanessa’s condition necessitated contacting their father for financial assistance.

Roger agreed to help if they left their mother’s home and came to be part of his new family in Dalkeith.

Although Vanessa passed away a few months later, being pulled away from her hit Lucas particularly hard. He became lost, adrift, unsettled, and sought nearly constant solace in the protection of Cecilia, his closest sibling in age. The pair were unnaturally inseparable, her a fierce watchdog to his slightly fragile soul.

There’s no question that she loves Lucas deeply and passionately, of course, but recently her obligation to look after him has begun to surface as rather jealous feelings against the freedom of her elder sister Johanna. Helpful has been her relationship with Nicol "Mac" Macintyre ([personal profile] sogreataname; clone of Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli), whom she met when relocated to Dalkeith and who encouraged her to apply along to Oxford with him. She's studying PPE and striving to find a balance between striking out on her own and fulfilling her obligations to Lucas-- and her father.
